Reading Page

Have you checked out the Reading page here on our classroom blog lately? As we learn new strategies in class to help students become better readers they are added to our in-class CAFE board, and that board is available for your viewing on the Reading page of the blog.

CAFE is an acronym that describes the 4 major areas of reading instruction:
C - Comprehension - I understand what I read.
A - Accuracy - I read the words that are on the page.
F - Fluency - I read accurately & with expression.
E - Expand Vocabulary - I know, find, and use new/interesting words.

The strategies are listed under each heading so you know what the purpose of the strategy is. When you scroll down below the CAFE chart, there's a mini Q&A section that explains how you can use this chart at home to help your child become a better reader.

Happy Reading! Visit the Reading page now!

Botanic Gardens

REMINDER: 2nd grade will be going to the Chicago Botanic Gardens on a field trip this Friday, October 6. Students should wear Carpenter RED, and pack a brown bag lunch. In addition, please watch the weather and help your child dress appropriately, we will be going rain or shine!

Poetry Folder

Students have started bringing home their Poetry Folders! Students will receive a new poem every Wednesday, and it is due back the following Wednesday. Therefore, their orange Poetry Folders will come home on Wednesday, and do not need to be returned to school until the following Wednesday.

The goal of our Poetry Folders is Fluency - the ability to read smoothly, with good phrasing, and intonation. Students are responsible for reading their poem to 6 people every week. After reading, the person who was read to should sign the back of the poem.

Who can they read to? ANYONE! Moms, Dads, big/little brothers & sisters, friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, babysitters, whomever! They can even call someone and read it over the phone (grandparents love this!). With that, I do understand that everyone has busy schedules, therefore I explained to students that I prefer humans, but if need be, 1 of their at home readings can be to a pet/toy/stuffed animal, etc. Then parents would just need to sign-off for that reading. So, 6 humans is the goal, but if need be, I will accept 5 humans + 1 non-human!
